The Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. Officially it’s called Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the conqueror in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 until 1952 . Prisoners included Lady Jane Grey, who was queen for about a week in the 16th century before she was deposed by Mary I. Also imprisoned there were two princes, Edward and Richard, ages 12 and 9, who were the sons of Edward IV. Tower of London is London’s one of the most famous landmarks. It’s important palace in London because it’s housing the crown jewels. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat.
