BAPE has been going now for over 25 years and its sales and popularity are stronger than ever. BAPE can be traced back to the ura-Harajuku scene in Japan, where BAPE founder Nigo found himself in a collective with the likes of Shin Takazawa of Neighborhood, Tetsu Nishiyama of WTaps and Hiroshi Fujiwara – all of whom helped each other out in the fashion industry.
Nigo’s first job was as an editor at Popeye magazine before he opened up his first store called ‘Nowhere’ with Jun Takahashi of the Japanese brand Undercover. After this, he worked with the brand Sk8thing to launch A Bathing Ape, also commonly known as BAPE.
